Post Rank

Early June 2011 Google bought the brand PostRank. Post Rank is an interesting social analytical service that measures social posts. Its rumored at this stage that with Google’s Page Rank license running out they are positioning Post Rank and a possible alternative to their page rank algorithm with offers a measure of the perceived stature of any page or site on the web.  With this  latest brand, Google has added a similar resource to better measure the quality of the social side of the internet.

What Is (or Was) PostRank?

PostRank is the largest single aggregator of social data currently available and their service allowed PostRank users to get independent up to date data on current internet trends. PostRank was originally established back in  2007 under the then name “AideRSS.” before re-branding as PostRank the following year as they continued to develop  their socially oriented features.  Over the next few years they have gone on to expand into trend analysis, social branding management as well as rolling out other blogging and consulting services.

Since the the purchase by Google both sides have remained fairly tight lipped about the transaction and future plans except for brief statements were sources went on to say that PostRank has “developed an innovative approach  and we think they can help us improve our products for our users and advertisers.”

Not much more has emerged thus far but its known that PostRank will be relocating lock stock and barrel  from their Ontario HQ to California, and will continue to focus on  their core expertise of social tracking and analysis.

What Google’s Acquisition Means

We all know that Google wants to be more social ever since the last Buzz nightmare they have been attempting to implement more and more social features into their portfolio of products. .

We can offer a few ideas that may be on their mind.

  • Google +1: The all new and shiny +1 button, (a copy some might say of Facebook’s “Like” button) is hoping to make a big impact establishing Google as a more social and less big brother brand and to try to make the Google SERP a more real by simply cutting out the link-based (page rank) SEO that currently tries to manipulate the way companies try to dominate the search rankings.
  • Social Search: The addition recently of a “social search” element to the Google SERP, where articles , stories and posts are discussed on Facebook and Twitter  are starting to be promoted promoted on the results page showing a more real time search results.
  • Google’s Social Network: The rumored Facebook rival ‘Google Plus’ is still far from ready and its probably hoped that PostRank will help them to really understand whats need to take on Facebook in a more meaningful clash of the big money Social Titans. Early reports that PostRank’s involvement with Google’s long awaited Plus Video Chat app have been positive.
